Missions of Leeds Presbyterian
First Light is a center for homeless women and children located in the heart of downtown Birmingham. It is the only emergency shelter in the area accepting homeless women and homeless women with children 24 hours a day.
The Leeds Welfare Cooperative has as their mission: “A hand up, not a hand out.” The cooperative distributes food from its pantry, prevents utility services from being disconnected by paying on past-due utility bills, purchases prescription medicines for individuals, and provides clothing. In addition, the Earl Street Christmas for Children provides toys and clothing. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, food gift certificates are given to families.
